A few days ago, BMW officially released a teaser image of the all-new iX3. This model will be the very first vehicle developed on BMW’s Neue Klasse platform and will also be locally produced in China, with test units already rolling off the production line at the BMW Brilliance Shenyang plant. The global premiere is scheduled for September 5, followed by a public debut at the Munich Motor Show in Germany.

As a Neue Klasse-based model, the new BMW iX3 is far more than a simple generational upgrade—it represents a complete reinvention. Apart from the name, virtually nothing is carried over from the current model. In this preview, we’ll explore what to expect from the all-new BMW iX3.

Internally coded as NA5, the iX3 will also have a long-wheelbase version for the Chinese market, codenamed NA6. The term “reinvention” can be summarized into four key aspects: an all-new exterior and interior design, the panoramic iDrive system, sixth-generation eDrive technology, and BMW’s new “Driving Super Brain.”

Cutting-Edge Technology

The iX3 will debut BMW’s Panoramic iDrive Head-Up Display, which uses ultra-short-throw projection technology to create a near-40-inch, 4K-resolution display across the windshield, with a contrast ratio of 100,000:1. Thanks to a nano-coated windshield with double the industry’s P-light reflectivity, the display remains clear even when wearing polarized sunglasses. Projected imagery blends seamlessly with the road ahead, delivering an authentic sense of depth at a perceived distance of 4–9 meters.

Underpinning the powertrain is BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive (Gen6) system. The iX3 50 xDrive variant will feature a dual-motor setup—an asynchronous motor up front and an excited synchronous motor at the rear—forming a highly efficient AWD system. Range figures are impressive: up to 800 km under WLTP and 900 km under CLTC conditions. Moreover, just 10 minutes of fast charging can add more than 350 km of range. The battery pack, co-developed with CATL and EVE Energy, uses large cylindrical cells with 20% higher energy density, delivering 30% improvements in both range and charging speed.

The “Driving Super Brain”

At the core of BMW’s new vehicle architecture are four high-performance computers, each handling different domains. Among them, the “Heart of Joy” Driving Super Brain—developed entirely in-house by BMW—stands out. It integrates powertrain and chassis control into a single domain, managing propulsion, braking, charging, energy recuperation, and steering with unprecedented efficiency.

Thanks to a next-generation wiring system and high-speed data transmission, this digital neural network reduces decision-making latency to less than 1 millisecond, with processing speeds 10 times faster than previous systems. Working in tandem with BMW Dynamic Performance Control, it delivers smoother, faster, and more precise handling across all driving conditions—maximizing both performance and driver confidence.

Bold New Design

Earlier this year, BMW unveiled the Vision Neue Klasse X concept, which strongly previews the production iX3. Iconic BMW design cues like the kidney grille and Hofmeister kink have been completely reinterpreted. The new Phygital Kidney Grille (a fusion of “physical” and “digital”) is not just a static design element but an illuminated digital signature with depth-enhancing light effects. Inspired by BMW classics like the E30 and E28, this modern reinterpretation combines heritage with futuristic digital expression.

Spy shots confirm that the production iX3 will closely resemble the Vision Neue Klasse X. With a drag coefficient of just 0.25, the SUV also introduces illuminated “BMW” lettering on the C-pillar and striking 3D taillights featuring an X-shaped light signature.

Dimensionally, the new iX3 measures 4780/1895/1635 mm, with a wheelbase of 2895 mm—slightly larger than the current model, aside from a lower overall height due to the sleeker profile.

At the rear, the design mirrors the clean, robust front end. Split-design taillights and roof spoiler add visual sophistication, while the lower fascia features bold surfacing and a dramatic diffuser, giving the SUV a futuristic yet cohesive presence.

While some may need time to adjust to the radical design language, BMW has reassured enthusiasts that its timeless DNA will remain intact—sheer driving pleasure will continue as the brand’s core value, now enhanced by cutting-edge digital intelligence.
