What is the Difference Between SA 516 70 and SA 285 GR C?
2025-12-02

SA 516 GR 70 offers higher tensile strength (485-620 MPa) and HIC resistance for high-pressure vessels, while SA 285 GR C has lower strength (310-450 MPa) for low-pressure applications.

Overview of SA 516 GR 70 and SA 285 GR C

ASME SA 516 GR 70, equivalent to ASTM A 516 GR 70, is a carbon steel plate specification designed for welded pressure vessels operating at moderate and low temperatures (down to -46°C). It is renowned for its high tensile strength, excellent weldability, and Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) resistance, making it ideal for critical applications in sour gas environments. In contrast, ASME SA 285 GR C is a carbon steel plate for low to intermediate pressure vessels, offering lower strength but higher ductility, suitable for less demanding applications like storage tanks.

GNEE Steel specializes in SA 285 GR C, providing plates that meet ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) standards.

Chemical Composition Comparison

The chemical compositions of SA 516 GR 70 and SA 285 GR C are similar, but SA 516 GR 70 has stricter controls to enhance performance in high-pressure and sour service environments:

Element

SA 516 GR 70 (% by Weight)

SA 285 GR C (% by Weight)

Notes

Carbon (C)

0.27 – 0.31 Max ≤0.28 SA 516 GR 70 has tighter limits for thicker plates to ensure weldability.
Manganese (Mn) 0.79 – 1.30 ≤0.90 SA 516 GR 70’s higher range improves strength and toughness.
Phosphorus (P) ≤0.025 ≤0.035 SA 516 GR 70’s stricter limit enhances toughness and HIC resistance.
Sulfur (S) ≤0.025 ≤0.035 Lower sulfur in SA 516 GR 70 reduces HIC risk in sour gas.
Silicon (Si) 0.15 – 0.40 0.10 – 0.35 Similar, aids deoxidation and manufacturability.
Aluminum (Al) ≥0.02 Not specified SA 516 GR 70 uses aluminum for fine-grain structure (killed steel).

Gangsteel’s SA 516 GR 70 plates are tested to ensure sulfur content as low as 0.003% for HIC applications, making them superior for sour service compared to SA 285 GR C, which lacks specific HIC testing requirements.

Mechanical Properties Comparison

The mechanical properties highlight the key differences in strength and ductility between the two grades:

Property

SA 516 GR 70

SA 285 GR C

Notes

Tensile Strength

485 – 620 MPa 310 – 450 MPa SA 516 GR 70 is significantly stronger for high-pressure applications.
Yield Strength (min) 260 MPa 205 MPa SA 516 GR 70 offers better resistance to deformation.
Elongation (min, 200 mm) 17% 26% SA 285 GR C is more ductile, suitable for less demanding structures.
Charpy V-Notch Impact 27 J at -46°C Not specified SA 516 GR 70’s impact toughness ensures low-temperature reliability.
Hardness (HBW) ≤200 ≤165 SA 516 GR 70’s higher hardness supports high-pressure environments.

These properties make SA 516 GR 70, such as ASTM A 516 GR 70, the preferred choice for high-pressure vessels, while SA 285 GR C is better suited for low-pressure storage tanks where ductility is prioritized.
