What is AR 400 Wear Plate?

AR 400 Wear Plate is a popular abrasion-resistant steel grade that combines through-hardness with good levels of ductility and formability. AR400 steel plate has a surface hardness of 360–440 BHN. It is ideal for moderate to heavy wear applications, such as bucket components, dump truck bodies, and construction equipment. Also referred to as AR400F (formable). Composition and hardening processes vary between mills, and mill test reports are supplied with each order.

The Significance of the “400” in AR400
The “400” refers to the Brinell Hardness Number (HBW)—a standardized scale measuring material resistance to surface indentation.

AR400 = ~400 HBW

AR450 = ~450 HBW

AR500 = ~500 HBW

At around 400 HBW, AR400 provides excellent wear protection while still maintaining enough ductility to allow bending, forming, and welding. It’s not the hardest—but that’s why it works in so many applications. It’s the best compromise between hardness and usability.
