What is DNV Standard Steel?

Steel grades NV A36, NV D36, NV E36, etc., are certified by DNV (Det Norske Veritas – Norwegian Classification Society) and are mainly used in shipbuilding. These steels must meet strict standards for strength, load-bearing capacity, and corrosion resistance in marine environments.

DNV steel is classified based on its ability to withstand environmental impact and corrosion resistance:

  • NV A36 Steel: High-strength steel suitable for deck structures.

  • NV D36 Steel: Stronger load-bearing capacity, commonly used in ship hulls.

  • NV E36 Steel: Highest durability and corrosion resistance, ideal for underwater structures.

Applications of DNV Shipbuilding Steel

DNV-certified NV A36, NV D36, NV E36 steel is widely used in the maritime industry, including:

  • Manufacturing and repairing ships, yachts, and fishing vessels.

  • Construction of offshore oil rigs.

  • Production of port and dock structures.

1) Tests are to be taken in the longitudinal direction. Normally, transverse test specimens are not required unless otherwise specified in the order. Impact tests not required when material thickness is less than 0.236 in. unless otherwise specified.

No more than one value below the specified miniminum average energy but no less than 70% of the specfied minimum average energy value.

Minimum average energy for full-size specimens. Refer to DNV Rules for sub-size specimen energy requirements.
