Corten B Corrosion Resistant Steel Plate

Corten B is a weather resistant steel which is better suited for heavy and load bearing structures. The material forms its own protective layer when exposed to atmospheric elements. Essentially, the top layer corrodes which then protects the steel beneath it. The natural finish does not normally require any form of maintenance such as painting, which makes the material a highly cost effective alternative to other structural steels.

Corten B steel is a variation of high strength low alloy construction grade steel with additional Cu to enhance corrosion resistance. Corten B steel is not normally considered for elevated temperature applications.

Corten B steel temperature range

The normal Corten B steel temperature range is 200-400 degrees F with monthly excursions to 600-900 degrees F for short periods of time. Corten B steel has good anti-corrosive properties, and thus can minimize the need for maintenance and corrosion-prevention treatment.

Corten B steel is typically used in advanced engineering and construction where corrosion resistance is important. Corten B steel can be customized for shapes and other tailoring options  upon request.

Corten B Corrosion Resistant Steel Plate

Q: Why is corten steel better than normal steel?

“Better” depends what characteristics that are most important to the individual case. The advantage of Corten is that it doesn’t have to be painted, it forms a very stable surface rust layer that protects the rest of the material from corrosion.

Q: What is the difference between Corten A and B?

Corten A: Contains a higher percentage of phosphorus (around 0.07-0.15%) compared to Corten B. This helps in the formation of a protective layer on the steel surface, enhancing its corrosion resistance. Corten B: Contains less phosphorus and higher manganese and copper content compared to Corten A.

Q: What is the weakness of Corten steel?

Corten steel tends to rust quickly if exposed to moisture for a long time. If Corten steel stays wet for too long, it does not get a chance to dry and there is a chance of rusting through.

Q: How long will Corten steel last outside?

Generally, Corten steel will patina or rust within six months of atmospheric exposure. Most weathering steel types need wet/dry weather cycles to develop and oxidize. With the protective rust that provides corrosion resistance, Corten steel can last upwards of a few decades to over 100 years.
