What is Corten B steel ?

Corten B steel plates, also known as “Cor-Ten B” or simply “Corten B,” are a type of weathering steel alloy. This steel alloy includes small amounts of copper, chromium, and nickel, which endow it with unique properties. These elements enhance its resistance to atmospheric corrosion, allowing it to form a protective rust-like layer when exposed to the elements. This layer, or patina, not only gives Corten B its distinct appearance but also provides excellent protection against further corrosion.

As a result, Corten B is widely used in various industries, particularly in architecture, construction, and outdoor applications. Its weather-resistant characteristics make it ideal for structures and projects that are exposed to the elements, reducing the need for additional protective coatings and lowering maintenance requirements.

Specifications of Corten B Steel Plates

Corten B steel plates’ specifications can vary depending on the manufacturer and project requirements. However, here are general specifications and properties according to common standards:

ASTM Standard (U.S.):

  • ASTM A588: Corten B steel plates often meet ASTM A588, a standard for high-strength, low-alloy structural steel with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance.

EN Standard (European Union):

  • EN 10025-5: Corten B steel plates can conform to EN 10025-5, which specifies hot-rolled structural steel products with enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance.

JIS Standard (Japan):

  • JIS G3125: In Japan, Corten B steel plates may adhere to JIS G3125, a standard for high-strength, low-alloy, and weather-resistant steel.

Q: Why is corten steel better than normal steel?

“Better” depends what characteristics that are most important to the individual case. The advantage of Corten is that it doesn’t have to be painted, it forms a very stable surface rust layer that protects the rest of the material from corrosion.

Q: What is the difference between Corten A and B?

Corten A: Contains a higher percentage of phosphorus (around 0.07-0.15%) compared to Corten B. This helps in the formation of a protective layer on the steel surface, enhancing its corrosion resistance. Corten B: Contains less phosphorus and higher manganese and copper content compared to Corten A.

Q: What is the weakness of Corten steel?

Corten steel tends to rust quickly if exposed to moisture for a long time. If Corten steel stays wet for too long, it does not get a chance to dry and there is a chance of rusting through.

Q: How long will Corten steel last outside?

Generally, Corten steel will patina or rust within six months of atmospheric exposure. Most weathering steel types need wet/dry weather cycles to develop and oxidize. With the protective rust that provides corrosion resistance, Corten steel can last upwards of a few decades to over 100 years.

Q: What is the Cor-Ten B steel ASTM equivalent?

S355JOW is an equivalent weathering steel to Corten B. Like Corten steel, S355JOW builds its own protective layer to prevent the steel from oxidation. This grade of weathering steel has added phosphorus, and it is the equivalent grade to Corten A.
