Ferromolybdenum can be used in any smelting process to add molybdenum to all types of steel and is available in a variety of sizes for addition to furnaces or ladles. If used correctly, the recovery rate should be essentially 100%. For optimal recovery from ladle addition, ferromolybdenum should be added after the molten metal covers the bottom of the ladle but before it is three-quarters full.

Ferromolybdenum is an alloy formed by combining iron and molybdenum. Ferromolybdenum is a hardener found in many heat-treatable steel alloys. Molybdenum protects stainless steel from corrosion and when mixed with iron, molybdenum also strengthens and hardens into austenite. Ferromolybdenum is available in many grades, but mainly only two are produced (one for the US and one for the EU), which contain between 60% and 75% pure molybdenum.
