Ferrotungsten is an alloy of tungsten and iron. Tungsten can not only reduce the elongation of steel to a small extent, but also increase the strength limit and yield point of steel. It can also improve the hardness and wear resistance of steel. The most common method of producing ferrotungsten is the “blocking method”, which uses carbon to reduce the oxides in the concentrate in an electric furnace, and then removes the solidified metal blocks from the furnace. There are also iron digging methods and thermite method.

There are two commonly used ferrotungsten: 70% and 80%. Ferrotungsten is mainly used as an additive for alloying elements in tungsten alloy steel (such as high-speed steel).
