FAQ

Q: What type of firewood is best for a smokeless fire pit?

A: Hardwoods like manuka and gum are ideal, as they burn longer, hotter, and with less smoke compared to softwoods.

Q: Can I use pine wood in my smokeless fire pit?

A: Yes, pine can be used, especially as a starter wood. However, it’s best to mix it with hardwoods to ensure a longer-lasting and more efficient burn.

Q: Why is dry firewood important for a smokeless fire pit?

A: Dry firewood burns more cleanly and efficiently. Wet or green wood creates excess smoke and may hinder the smokeless function of the fire pit.

Q: What is the best way to store firewood?

A: Store firewood under cover or next to a wall with enough airflow to aid drying. Avoid stacking wood directly on the ground to prevent moisture absorption.

Q: What is ‘hot mix’ firewood and should I use it?

A: Hot mix is a blend of softwood and hardwood. It’s great for starting and maintaining a fire, offering a balance between quick ignition and long-lasting heat.

Q: Is manuka wood worth the extra cost?

A: Yes, manuka is highly valued for its intense heat output, long burn time, and aromatic scent. It’s an excellent choice for smokeless fire pits.

Q: How long does firewood need to dry before it’s ready to burn?

A: Softwoods may dry in 6 – 12 months, while hardwoods like gum or manuka may require up to 18 months of seasoning.

Q: Can I burn green or freshly cut wood in a smokeless fire pit?

A: No, green wood has high moisture content and will produce smoke and poor combustion. It must be seasoned first.

Q: What are the risks of using macrocarpa in my fire pit?

A: While it burns well, macrocarpa can spark, so use with caution and avoid in windy conditions or around flammable materials.

Q: Does using the wrong firewood affect my fire pit’s performance?

A: Yes, unsuitable or wet wood can lead to excess smoke, inefficient burning, and build-up of creosote or soot.

Q: Are wood pellets a good alternative to traditional firewood?

A: Yes, wood pellets are low in moisture and burn efficiently, making them a suitable alternative for smokeless fire pits. Look for the ones that say hardwood on the packet, these will work best.
