Grain oriented electrical steel

Grain-oriented electrical steel, also known as cold-rolled grain-oriented silicon steel. Cold-rolled oriented silicon steel refers to cold-rolled electrical steel with 2.9%~3.5% si and a certain pattern and direction of the steel plate crystal structure. The carbon content does not exceed 0.08%, and it can contain no more than 1.0% aluminum. The proportion of other elements does not make it have the characteristics of other alloy steels; the thickness does not exceed 0.56 mm; if it is in roll shape, it can be any Width; if it is plate-shaped, its width should be at least ten times its thickness.

What is Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES)?

Grain oriented electrical silicon steel is a soft magnetic material used as the core material of power transformers. It is characterized by an obvious Goss texture, that is, 110 <001> preferential crystal orientation. The grain structure of non-oriented silicon steel is chaotic and disorderly, mixed with a large number of messy and different textures. At present, most of the core components of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are laminated with non-oriented silicon steel sheets. Therefore, with the development trend of miniaturization and high density of motor systems, high saturation magnetic flux density and low iron loss of core silicon steel materials will become the main requirements in the future.

The Advantages of Grain Oriented Electrical Steel

  • Magnetic
The magnetic properties of the product are characterized by low iron loss, high magnetic permeability and excellent application performance.
  • Thickness tolerance
A good thickness tolerance is characterized by a small thickness difference in the direction parallel to the rolling direction, a small thickness difference in the direction perpendicular to the rolling direction, and a high lamination coefficient.
  • Processing performance
Product is suitable for die cutting and has excellent dimensions.
  • Insulating coating
The insulating paint has small color deviation, good adhesion, excellent heat resistance and corrosion resistance, and high resistance to insulating paint. There are many types of insulating coatings available for production.
After testing by a professional testing agency, the content of harmful substances complies with current international and domestic environmental protection laws and regulations such as EU RoHS and REACH.

Application

Grain-oriented electrical steel is an indispensable soft magnetic material in the electric power industry. It is mainly used in various types of transformers, rectifiers, reactors, large motors and other industries, and is used to manufacture the iron cores of various transformers.

Grain Oriented Electrical Steel VS Non-Grain Oriented Electrical Steel

For a quick decision, this table highlights the fundamental differences:

FAQ

Q:What is the main difference between GO and NGO electrical steel in simple terms?
A:The simplest difference is direction. Grain-Oriented (GO) steel is like a highway, offering super-low energy loss in one specific direction, making it perfect for power transformers. Non-Grain-Oriented (NGO) steel is like a city grid, offering good, uniform performance in all directions, making it ideal for rotating equipment like electric motors and generators.

Q:Which steel is better for transformers?
A:For power and distribution transformers, Grain-Oriented (GO/CRGO) steel is always the better choice. Its directional grain structure is specifically designed to minimize core loss in the transformer core, leading to higher efficiency and less wasted energy over the transformer’s lifespan.

Q:Why is Non-Oriented (NGO) steel used for electric motors?
A:Electric motors require a magnetic field that constantly changes direction as the motor rotates. NGO steel’s uniform magnetic properties in all directions (isotropy) ensure that the motor runs smoothly and efficiently, regardless of the direction of the magnetic flux.

Q:Which type of electrical steel is more expensive?
A:Grain-Oriented (GO) steel is typically more expensive than Non-Oriented (NGO) steel. This is due to its more complex and precise manufacturing process required to align the grain structure. However, its higher efficiency in transformers often results in long-term energy savings that justify the initial cost.

Q:Can you supply specific grades like 23QG090 or 50H470?
A:Yes. As a specialist supplier, GNEE Steel offers a wide range of specific grades for both GO and NGO electrical steel, including common grades like 23QG090 for transformers and 50H470 for motors. We can provide technical data sheets for each grade. Contact us with your required grade for a quote.

Q:Do you offer slitting services for electrical steel coils?
A:Of course. We offer professional slitting and cut-to-length services. We can convert wide electrical steel coils into strips or custom-sized sheets based on your specific core manufacturing requirements. This service helps you reduce waste and streamline your production process.
