Q235B: The Chinese Equivalent

The Chinese equivalent to ASTM A36 is Q235B, as outlined in the GB/T 700 standard. Q235B is a low-carbon steel widely used in China for similar structural applications. Here’s a closer look at its properties:

  • Chemical Composition: Q235B contains up to 0.20% carbon, 0.35-0.80% manganese, and small amounts of silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur. Its composition is very close to A36, though A36 allows slightly higher carbon content.
  • Mechanical Properties: Q235B offers a minimum yield strength of 235 MPa (approximately 34 ksi) and a tensile strength of 370-500 MPa. While the yield strength is slightly lower than A36, the tensile strength range overlaps significantly.

Like A36, Q235B is typically hot-rolled, making it suitable for structural applications where surface finish is less critical than strength and cost.
